Challenging General Knowledge at Durham

8th September 2016 by alandunnighan

An ‘interesting’ experience for four Byron students was had when they went to Durham Debating chamber for a general knowledge “University Challenge”.

The students were early so spent some time on the plaza outside the cathedral, it was a beautiful sunny day. One student decided to go exploring in the
cathedral and got lost! ‘I probably saw things the general public don’t usually see’ quoted the student. Two went into the cathedral looking for her and ended
up asking a random American (they thought worked at the cathedral) if he had seen ‘a girl with a t-shirt on’, well that was vague. But they found her eventually!

When it was finally time for the challenge, the student’s signs were mixed up; so the captain wasn’t actually the captain, the shy one was and one person got a wrong second name! Turns out that Byron were first up for the challenge, when told to introduce themselves and state the A-levels they were doing, the first student was confused and only mentioned one of her A-levels (there was everybody else with four or five A-levels – oops)!

St Thomas More won and Byron gained a creditable score. One student quoted ‘We knew answers to questions that weren’t ours’ (envy). You can also ask this student about the buzzers too, as she won’t stop talking about how ‘unfair’ they were.

All in all, Byron ended up having the most laughs with the best (and biggest) mascot (Bryon the Byron bear), getting lost, getting mixed up signs and A-levels and at the very end of the day, they (very strangely) saw a police car bump into a bollard. It all happens at Byron!!!!!!!!!!!

Jas Bassi attended Profound Services training centre in Seaham. He had the opportunity to drive the fork lift trucks, with training.

Dylan Welburn attended Boots the chemist in Horden. Staff were particularly impressed with his customer services skills as they had received two surveys from customers stating that he provided a 1st class service.

Elizabeth Oxenham worked for two weeks at Gentoo, learning all about Health and Safety.

She had a fantastic experience attending meetings and travelling as far as Scotland to visit sites.

Pope John Paul II Award

15th August 2016 by Admin Linda

The Pope John Paul II Award available to Sixth-Formers

This aims to provide volunteers with new skills and respect for the people in their local parishes. The award is important to encourage young people to appreciate religion as something to take an active part in and experience content through serving others. Volunteers will take part in work suited to them in their local parish and will achieve an award having completed the mission. This could stand out well on a University application. Useful volunteering could range from reading at Mass or flower-arranging behind the scenes. Recently a select number of students were able to witness the introduction to the award at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle. The visit was an introduction and warm welcome for the schools in the local area.

We have 13 students (12 from Yr12 and 1 from Yr13) taking part in the award, this is a remarkable number as there are only 80 students or so taking part across the Diocese.
